Other descriptive passages are simply excessive. Laszlo was an interesting part of the plot and kind of blew my mind but left me a little disappointed at the same time? I first read the book in when it appeared to acclaim by critics and public alike.

Everyone loved this book, remember?? Even the opening scene, the one that launches the flashback to the story, receives no closure.
Customers who bought this item also bought. I think I was impressed with the scenery, since I love the Victorian period in America. Maybe it’s because my husband informed me, while I was reading the book, about an article he’d read awhile back which called into question the validity of psychological profiling, and which pointed out that for the few cases were it seems to work, there are a lot of other cases where the profile has been flat out wrong or too vague to be helpful.
Caleb Carr is an American novelist and military historian. This isn’t even a “bought it and it sat on my shelf and I forgot to read it” for two years. He lives in upstate New York. I did finish it, as the plot was somewhat propulsive enough to overcome my annoyance at the poor writing, but I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone else. The characrers felt flat to me again, I may be wrong as i gave up early.
I didn’t feel like it was done right. From the way the story was winding down towards the climactic showdown, I was expecting that things would not end there, that we would get a deeper psychological assessment of the villain. Also, the climax is way too crowded.
So I kept finding myself wondering at the level of detail they were able to glean from their profiling, and whether it fell outside of all realms of credulity or not. The Alienist is one of those books that starts off slow but for a reason. New York City history! Gays are either pedophiles, rapists, victims, or animals. Aside from that, one thing which kept popping into my head was the fact that the whole thing’s a bit far-fetched. I liked the whole vibe of this sort of being a Sherlock Holmes, but not really. Many of the suppositions were so dead on as to be beyond the pale – and even those which were wrong ended up being at least a little bit valid.

It was fascinating to read about how this birth libr forensic psychology and forensics in general was moving the investigation along. Of course, if anyone in the old guard catches wind of this, Roosevelt’s career is in jeopardy. I like authors like James Patterson who get right to the point–I don’t need to know what color the curtains were and how they felt to the touch as the character walked past them. Anyway, the book by Carr is still an entertaining read, and I believe it actually deserves 3.
Also very poorly edited with many uses of similar but wrong words to what the author probably meant to say. Kinda makes me mad.
I seem to recall that I brought this book inwhen it was first published, but have actually never read it.
The most enigmatic and believable character is definitely Laszlo Kreisler who is not only a true savant, but also a compassionate figure due to his background.
But horribly mutilating and hurting little to young boys still failed to bring any empathy into the book, which only makes the book all the more flat and repellent. It slows the pace. Libo structural presentation of the novel could be best described using the following metaphor:
