Kind of wraps up Taipan after the death of Dirk Struan by following his son to Japan for more adventure and cutthroat mercantilism. To escape certain death and also to further his study of the source of foreign power, the shishi gets himself shipped off to England with Tyrer’s help. This position puts him at odds with almost everyone around him. She has brief moments of strength and cunning followed by brief moments of crying and helpless crap.
I guess that at the end of his life, he clavwll want to give readers the same pattern with central hero as many of his previous stories did, so he plays a sort of game here.
If you like the series Shogun, Tai-Pan then read this once as the background helps a lot for “Nobel House”. There’s also penis envy and flavell sutra, but Japanese style.
I agree Clavell took a different approach in Gai-Jin. Things that are awesome: The number of important characters in this book is greater than Shogun, which means you have to get a lot further into the book before you actually begin to care about any of them for me it was about pages in, at least partly because Angelique was ridiculously irritating before she had her unfortunate trauma.

Gai-jin (Asian Saga, book 3) by James Clavell
This book is my least favorite in Clavell’s Asian saga. However, again as usual, the plot clavel is more a slice of life or sample stretch of events so there is no real resolution. Gai-jin is a very easy way of learning about Japanese characters, characteristics, attitudes toward sex, food and politics, which apply today The reason given was an earthquake and rising production costs. Totally not at the same level as Tai-Pan. Fortunes could be made. Tokugawa Yoshinobuan old-school samurai and a dangerous and cunning adversary; he was the model for the character of Yoshi Toranaga.
