Ian Serraillier was a British novelist and poet. Which then leads to finding new friends and undertaking carrers and basic training which will help them for life. He spends more than a year in prison before escaping, after knocking out a guard and stealing the man’s uniform. The family tackles many obstacles on their way to reaching destiny, with a paper knife to guide them.

The three children swodr spent the winter living in the cellar of a bombed house on the other side of Warsaw, and the summer living in woodlands outside the city.

Story The story follows a family of Polish refugees making their way from the capital of Warsaw to the safety of their grandparents home in Switzerland, and reunite with their captive parents just after the events of the Second World War. Jan is another of the many Warsaw war orphans who somehow had met their father, and then fainted near the bombed out basement which served as home for the siblings, and was taken in by them.

I would recommend this one to any child who has the reading ablitity to read it. The strengths of the characters, their failings as they lead such an unpredictable My granddaughter aged 12 brought this book home from school.

Also understanding that if one goes down the other nor lives to see the world the same again. Based on a true story, this novel is the story of four children travelling through war-ravaged Europe during World War Two. I first read this novel while Serrailleir was in secondary school and I recently found it again in a box of old books when I was cleaning out my attic.

Ruth had admonished Edek for his folly and realised they had to escape, so the children climbed along the rooftops of the adjacent houses and watched from a distance as their house was blown up. As long as the children have the sword, they will manage to escape Poland and arrive in Switzerland safely. His story isn’t as shocking as other war fiction I’ve read, which does mean that the more interesting side of the history is often glossed over.

It does have a happy ending, but that is to be expected.

I know I definitely would have enjoyed it as a chil I added this apparently well-beloved children’s classic to my to-read list because it was recommended by one of my internet friends, Amy.

It’s perfectly understandable, as this is a book for younger readers, who shouldn’t be well-versed in the true horrors of war until they can handle it.

Edek almost drowned, because he was too weak to swim, but Jan was able to save the Balicki children. Found this on a list of children’s classics, read with daughter I really underestimated this book by the cover! I picked this copy up again as a gift for my son, hoping that he would enjoy it as much as I had. It showcases the exceptional courage and intense fragility of children in war time and the consequences they must live with.

One of the few book I read as teenager that I still remember. It was often heartbreaking, knowing that Serraillier based the children on true life accounts from WW II, that though this was a story for me, it was the reality for multitudes. Together with his wife, Anne Margaret Rogers, he founded the New Windmill Series inpublished by Heinemann Educational Books, which set out to provide inexpensive editions of good stories. I just read this to my 8 year old having had fond memories of reading it when I was at primary school.
