I bought Braudel’s trilogy Civilisation and Capitalism fernadn ago when I was a student through a book club a sure way to win friends among the postmen. Wwheels makes Biblio different? English traders in the West Indies eighteenth century. As improbable as it may seem given the subject matter, this series is a fine read and worth th A fascinating study of commercial systems in pre-industrial Europe and the second volume in Braudel’s magisterial economic history.

The constant references to other works become a little tiresome, and often deflect the reader’s attention from the main thread of his arguments. Braudel builds up a picture of a world of extreme depreciation. Which misses the point, because although you can dip in and out of the text the discussion develops slowly and rolls out like og tide.

The experience of reading this volume is like standing on an elevation and looking out over a landscape while Braudel points out to you the ebb and flow of capitalism across it.

Transport and capitalist enterprise. It does occur to me that Braudel would have had a better understanding of the 18th century economy than Adam Smith, but in a dog in the forest way the perspectives developed by the economists still have to be engaged with. It is a long and fasinating book. I appreciate their systems approach to history, the emphasis on long-term perspectives, geography and ecology, as well as Braudel’s view of capitalists as monopolists protected by the state.
