THE RICH AND THE SUPER-RICH by Ferdinand Lundberg | Kirkus Reviews

At the time he could only provide a sampling of the economic and political patterns of those families, which, for one reason or another, had come under public scrutiny. In addition to the Sixty Families he dealt with in depth, he was able to outline the probable holdings of a few hundred other families.

It is, rather, a systematic study of the entire wealthy class and its familial structure. It is written for the layman to awaken the reader to the real and little-known situation. Original publication was delayed to update John Paul Getty’s most current wealth. These families have all the old levers of power and pelf plus a whole host of new ones created for them during the intervening decades by the politicians, lawyers and judges who serve them.

I had also enrolled in evening college courses being offered on my new base of assignment at Edwards Air Force Base, California. The base at which I was assigned overseas did not offer college-level courses, and I was hungry for the knowledge that can only be offered by college or university courses. Also, I spent several hours each evening when I wasn’t in my college classes and on the weekends doing research for term papers and checking out books to read on subjects that piqued my considerable interests.

A good friend of mine overseas had a Bachelor’s degree in economics, and he had introduced me to the subject, so that was one of my interests. Over that weekend, I read the book. I couldn’t put it down. It was much more interesting than many of the books of fiction I had read by some of the great authors. I read it twice more during the next two weeks. It opened my eyes as to the people who really controlled the economy and political power in the United States.

During several moves over the years, I lost my original paperback edition. I’ve read it a couple of times since, and once again, I’ve been reminded of where the seat of wealth and political power lies in this country. And it ain’t pretty! A French Revolution philosopher is quoted early in the book saying, “Behind every great fortune, there is a great crime. Don’t be dismayed at this book’s ancient provenance It is as up-to-date as tomorrow’s breaking cable news, and twice as entertaining!

All the biggest fortunes of that era du Ponts, Rothschilds and Rockerfellers, to start are there in all their “Robber Baron” glory!! For a book written inthis book is still relevant. The Rich run the Country, and have been for a long time.

This names the names, connects them to the big businesses they run, tells how they control the government, and avoid taxes on their massive wealth.

One person found this helpful. Written almost 50 years ago by an excellent writer it describes an economic and political situation that is still accurate. Not sure that I buy into the primise of this book like I did when I was a college student back in the 60’s.

It is however a great read now and comparing the writer’s subject matter with the benefit of hindsight.

He supper a lot right and a lot wrong. Given how much things have changed it still is a very worth while read. Great history of our “oligarchy” a surface democracy at best feedinand the founding of the nation.

In depth documented coveragebrilliant man Lundberg!!! Loaded with facts and figures, this gigantic book seems at first intimidating — but it is really quite easy to read and under-stand. Being able to “swallow” what’s richh is a different thing, however — one is horrified to learn that our US Democracy isn’t truly a democracy at all Since this book was published in the s, there is info that is absent For me, the most valuable part of the book is the description of the “common anx man” vs.

See the wonderfully th index — as the page numbers are suuper between the paperback and hard-cover. Lundberg’s reasonings why are times more accurate, and times fedrinand frighteningthan F.

The reasons given make sper, logical sense — and make one not only appreciate their accuracy, but also appreciate, greatly, such “traitors to their class” as Robert Kennedy and to me, anywayJohn Kerry — people who, despite their wealth, see “mass men”, and womenas nothing more, and nothing less ricy, than fellow human-beings! It’s too bad there are not more of them! Lundberg died a few years ago.

I found this out searching the New York Times database. I did not find his obituary — but I did find that of his wife, who died even more recently. Sadly — and tellingly — hers was NOT a “feature” obituary — but one which, instead, had to be inserted, and paid forby her family. Although it is possible that Mrs. Lundberg preferred it this way — wanting to be one of the “mass” of humanity to the end, it is also quite possible that the “powers that be” wanted to “bury” the name of Lundberg, and Ferdinand Lundberg’s crusading books!

As long as his books remain buyable — and especially if this wonderful classic is someday soon reprinted — I will know we haven’t fallen into a dictatorship, yet!

I am glad that I bought a copy when it first came out, and I am super-glad to have been able to have bought a newish copy on Amazon!
