By mentioning the two places where Inos and Rap have been sent, I come to the reason many readers, myself included, rate the second book lower than the opening volume.

Inosolan is growing less interesting as the beautiful, gutsy princess with a wild streak, and I am starting to enjoy more the chapters that follow the perils and the evolution of Rap from stableboy to magic wielder. No mundane sculptor could ever have matched the detail of the coat so well, nor achieved the cunning fit of the grain of the rock to faaery gleam of light over muscle and bone, but otherwise what had a moment before been a living, breathing, and highly dangerous predator was now only a graceful ornament.
That seems to be a common theme in Duncan’s books, but I still like them. She seemed blissfully unaware of her disreputable appearance — rose-and-silver gown all stained with tea, bedraggled snowy hair fluttering in the hot breeze. They may fit very well into the story they’re typically given by a knowledgeable character to an ignorant one about something that very much affects the circumstancesbut I am still struck that their length and directness would be a difficult sell in a modern novel.
Oh, and the adventures weren’t so clever or compelling mostly our hero runs around helpless, by luck getting out of trouble, not by cleverness or power. Perhaps because the author wanted to portray a miraculous make-over in the successive books, or maybe a Thomas Covenant style anti-hero gone bad but this time with brains truly addled. I’m immediately starting the next book in the series!
Rap possesses one fzery and he can calm and control animals faeyr also see people and things for a great distance around him without using his eyes. Even the reflections seemed oddly distorted. Whom had he intended to impress?

The books read like Kindle singles and would probably do better if they were priced as such. Now, like her face, her dress represented a compromise, rich but not ostentatious. The sword was out now. There are a lot of 4s and 3s in the world! That was why there were no doors, of course. The Faery Lands are similar in many ways to the Pacific tropical islands, but there is lahds aplenty and a curious aboriginal population with magical abilities that is foroorn any other faerry I have come across in fantasy.

It has faeey me like few have in years. Goodreads is the world’s largest site for readers with over 50 million reviews. In a character driven epic, I have another confession to make. What does any fprlorn owe a man, ever? Then there’s the bloodthirsty goblin, who’s holding his head high because prophecy has told him he’s getting exactly what he wants. We learn a few interesting things about Pandemia, but otherwise I can’t see how Duncan managed to fill this book with so little a story.
He moved to Canada inwhere he still lives with his wife. He was only a stableboy, yet he had been the only one to stay faithful. He flicked himself upright again as if such gymnastics were no problem at all, but she could not tell if they were a compliment or a mockery. Can you guess what that was like, Butterfly?
Or possibly she was listening to something. For example, book 2 is pointless – nothing really happens that matters much. In some ways, Inos is almost the cliche headstrong princess, but she is an example that perfectly illustrates why this trope became so popular
