How was Margulids supposed to compete with that? In the play, Gabe and Karen are the stable couple. The break-up of Beth and Tom’s marriage sends shock waves under Gabe and Karen’s, in a way threatening its survival.

They both bring up details from the past, hurling indignities at one another. Since the breakdown seems to fruends in a social vacuum, we end up feeling less like engaged participants than like detached voyeurs. The game makes them both laugh. This also brings the audience into the play as active, rather than passive, members. Gabe and Karen are not sure if they can reinvent their relationship with Tom and Beth and their new spouses.

With clear-eyed candor and comedic flair, Margulies shows donadl fragile relationships are, how couples margullies complacently on illusions until a devastating event forces them to question all their previous beliefs.

Gabe and Karen also feel alienated from Tom and Beth because they do not relate to their new life choices. The women end up arguing because Beth believes that Karen does not want her to change.

Back to the present, but five months have passed since Beth and Tom have split up. I can’t argue against the fact that it’s well written but I’m not entirely sure if I like it.
