The answer I give here is purposefully vague, as usual. It has been my experience that students require much practice with circuit analysis to become proficient.
This package accepts a positive-logic Binary Coded Decimal BCD input and converts it to the proper pattern necessary to illuminate a 7 segment display. You need to tie them to appropriate logic levels RBI should be ‘0’ if you want to display a zero.
A microcontroller can be programmed to perform the binary to decimal conversion and then use a look-up chart to perform the segment conversion. Truth be 7484, I chose a pretty bad example to try to make an SOP expression from, since there are only two non-zero output conditions out of ten! You can use a diode tester or a simple voltage source and a resistor to determine the pinout of your particular display.
Note that I did not specify anywhere in the question or in the answer whether the application of voltage across an LCD segment darkened or lightened that segment.
One of the points of this question is for students to realize that bigger groups are better, in that they yield simpler SOP terms. Other than a little more conditional logic connections and a few more stages, there’s nothing stopping you from building a full digital clock with hours, minutes, and seconds.
What datahseet you think the problem is? In most sciences, realistic experiments are much more difficult and expensive to set 4748 than electrical circuits.
