There was much, much more in this book, but to write and understand all of Nietzsche’s many teachings, it would require writing a novel of even greater length. I had avoided Nietzsche for years, largely because I’d encountered him as the target of Christian apologist arguments along with Freudand I didn’t want him to be part of my own atheism.

Nietzsche was not a religious man, in any real sense of the word, but in this book it is hard to remember that. The style was too exhausting and the plot structure too lackluster for me to enjoy it as a novel, but as a philosophical treatise, it was too unsystematic.

Zarathustra imparts his unworldly advice and wisdom to those who do not understand it. Zarathustra starts off emotionally distraught that there appears to be no purpose to life because god is dead, and assumes the rest of mankind who is in any way self-conscious must share his emotional state, or should share it.
