Airborn by Kenneth Oppel – review | Children’s books | The Guardian

This book is reminiscent of the best pirate adventures of the past, but ups the ante by setting half of the tale in the air, rather than the seas, and by taking time with characterizations, rather than creating stock Baddies.

It has action, it has good characters, it has a good grasp of history, it has mystery … and did I mention the action.

Unrecognized, they ask for shelter in the pirate camp and make a plan to sneak away during the night. Finally decided to review this book, as I think it is really underrated, and more people should read it! I love this character. Among his papers he left descriptions of strange creatures he encountered on his attempt to circumnavigate the world in a hot air balloon and Kate, who idolized her adventurous grandfather, hopes to prove he was more than a crazy old man and prove her own talent o;pel scientific investigation.

She is pretty, rich, demanding, intelligent, and strong minded. Seldom do I come across a title that has a strong plot, a great writing style, and wonderful characters that are multi-dimensional, real, and vivid. The adventurous Kate is held back because she is a rich young lady in a time when rich young ladies learned social graces and were expected to marry as soon as possible. Well worth a read if you like a good old-fashioned ripping yarn. And the pirates were there for some danger so we didn’t get too bored. I was paralysed with excitement. I admit that I am a huge airship fan, they have a romantic image for me once you get past the combustible gas and maybe my opinion is off because I was interested in simply reading about a story in a world where airships rule if we could have produced helium rather than relying on hydrogen they may still be bigbut I loved it.

I started out writing sci-fi epics my Star Wars phase then went on to swords aigborn sorcery tales my Dungeons and Dragons phase and then, during the summer holiday when I was fourteen, started on a humorous story about a boy addicted to video games written, of course, during my video game kennfth. Kate is not only a rich girl, but she has a love for some oddities, such as exploring the strange creatures that she finds in their o;pel. I heard about this company because mateys of mine worked as voice actors for the company.

A small warning and minimal spoiler: Instead, it was a wonderful, well-paced combination of the two. Even the technical parts about the various parts of the airship, details about the mechanisms, and the behind-the-scenes peek into crew life on the fictional and fantastic Aurora were fascinating to me.

Matt wants to advance in rank on the airship, but he can’t afford officer training. Matt’s curiosity about the man’s dying words is piqued a year later when the fellow’s granddaughter Kate arrives on board, bearing his journal.

I found that this really gave an insight into how he sees the world, and how he feels. All the exciting fiction I seem to be reading of late is, technically, aimed at kids.
